BOBCATS GARNER ACADEMIC HONORS

The Bates field hockey squad was well represented on the 2010 NESCAC Fall All-Academic Team. To be honored, a student-athlete must have reached sophomore academic standing and be a varsity letter winner with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.35.

Michelle Brady '13
A sophomore striker from Milton, Mass. who appeared in all 15 games starting 10 of them and had 2 goals and an assist. Michelle's work in the classroom allowed her to benefit from the conference making sophomores eligible for this recognition in 2010.

Amanda Brusca '12
A junior defender from Prides Crossing, Mass. Amanda appeared in all 15 games and started in 13. Amanda was a member of the NFHCA All-Academic Squad in 2009 and would have qualified for NESCAC recognition if sophomores had been included last fall.

Zoe Donaldson '11
Senior captain and a defender from Bronxville, NY, Zoe started in all 15 games this season. She led the team with 5 defensive saves. Zoe garnered this honor last year as well as a spot on the NFHCA All-Academic Squad.

Sarah Merullo '12
A junior midfielder from Essex, Mass Sarah also started all 15 games in 2010. After being shifted from the defense into the midfield, she scored 2 goals. Like Amanda, Sarah was ineligible for this honor in 2009 due to class year. Sarah was named to the 2009 NFHCA All-Academic Squad.

Beaton named to NFHCA all-region field hockey team

Lyndsay Beaton '12 scored a team-high eight goals for Bates in 2010.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College junior forward Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) was included on the 2010 Longstreth/FHCA Division III All-Region Teams announced Thursday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association, Beaton's first career postseason award. Beaton was named to the Second Team in the New England West Region.

Beaton led the Bobcats in scoring in 2010 with eight goals and one assist, and she scored her points in nine different games. Beaton tallied points against the likes of Division III powerhouses Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury and Tufts.

Beaton's eight goals ties as the highest single-season total by a Bates player in the past nine seasons, along with Abby Childs '09 in 2007 and Sema Kazarian '11 in 2008.

This is the second postseason honor garnered by a Bates player: goalkeeper Katie McEnroe '11 was selected to play in the 2010 NFHCA Division III Senior Game earlier this month.

2010 Season Review

The conclusion of the 2010 Bates field hockey campaign was considerably positive. The Bobcats won three of their final five games of the season, including a thrilling NESCAC victory against rival Colby College on 10/29, which earned the team a spot in the playoffs. Bates then faced off against the No. 1 seeded Tufts University Jumbos in a NESCAC quarter-final match up, & came up short 4-1 to end the season.

The Bobcats played well in their final regular season matches. On 10/13, in-state non-conference rival USM visited Bates, & were blanked 3-0. The team’s leading scorer, Lyndsay Beaton, stared the Bates’ offense with a deflection off of sophomore Michelle Brady’s stick just 14 minutes into the contest. A mere three minutes later, Bates earned an offensive corner, where Brady was able to control a rebound off the pads of the USM goalkeeper & redirect the ball into the cage. With 5 minutes left in the game, senior Sema Kazarian found teammate Laura Baran (’13), who put the ball in the cage for the 3rd & final tally of the night. Ultimately, Bates outshot USM 33-12, & earned eight corners to USM’s three. Bates’ GK Katie McEnroe recorded her 3rd shut-out of the season, while senior captain Zoe Donaldson tallied a defensive save.

The Bobcats couldn’t carry their momentum into their next match on 10/16 against NESCAC opponent Wesleyan. The visitors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes. Seven minutes later, Bates made a tally when, on a penalty corner, Kelly McManus (’12) inserted the ball to Kazarian, who in turn set up Beaton to slam the ball past the Wesleyan GK. Despite McEnroe’s 15 saves & another defensive save from Donaldson, the Bobcats were not able to hold off the Cardinals, who eventually won the game 4-1.

Bates then rebounded with a decisive 4-1 win against visiting NEC on 10/19. The Bobcats recorded 48 shots (vs. NEC’s 5), & four different players contributed to the final score. Sophomore Riley Kundtz, juniors Sarah Merullo, McManus, & Beaton found the back of the net in the win. NEC did score their lone goal in the second half, preventing the Bobcats from earning a shutout.

The Bobcats were unable to build from the victory, as they fell to NESCAC rival Middlebury College on 10/23. Just three minutes into the game, Bates tallied a score off of a penalty corner, in which McManus & Kazarian set up a ball for Beaton to slam past the GK. Middlebury answered six minutes later, & the game remained tied 1-1 for the rest of the half.

Despite a 19 save effort from McEnroe, the Bobcats could not capitalize again, & the Panthers scored three goals in a span of 10 minutes midway through the second half to secure the win against the Bobcats.

In need to win their last regular season game in order to make the post-season, Bates earned a come-from-behind win against Colby in their next match. The team was propelled to victory by two goals from Kazarian as they beat their in-state NESCAC foe by a score of 2-1.

Colby jumped to a quick lead, as a Colby forward deflected a hard drive from the top of the circle up-and-over McEnroe’s shoulder, just under five minutes into the game. The Colby offense continued to pressure the Bobcats defense for the remainder of the first half, outshooting Bates 14-5.

Even so, the Bobcats rallied in the second half, embodying the do-or-die mentality that came with the high-stakes of the match. Bates got onto the scoreboard when Kazarian redirected a hit from McManus past the Colby GK. Just four minutes later, Kazarian struck again, slamming home a pass from Baran.

After the game, Kazarian explained that “the team’s ability to come from behind and beat Colby was a show of how badly [we] wanted to win, & proved that Bates deserves to be in the playoffs.”

With the victory against Colby, the Bobcats qualified for post-season NESCAC play for the second time in five years. On 10/31, Bates traveled to Tufts University for a match-up against the No. 1 seed in the tournament, who also were ranked No. 5 nationally at that time. Bates fell behind 10 minutes into the game, & was unable to get back into the contest. Bates was held without a shot in the first half, but picked up the offensive pressure in the second. Kazarian cut Tuft’s lead to 4-1, but it was too little too late for the Bobcats, as they ended their season with the 4-1 loss.

Despite losing in the first round of NESCAC play-off action, it was a successful building year for Bates. After going 1-12 overall & 0-9 in NESCAC play just a year ago, the team was able to improve to 5-10 overall & 2-7 in NESCAC play for the 2010 season.

The Bobcats are already working towards August 2011, when they will once gain take the turf & begin their collective preparation for the season. GO BOBCATS!

Student-Athlete Spotlight

Donaldson, Cosgrove the subjects of SAAC's Student-Athlete Spotlight
November 8, 2010

In an effort to shed light on Bates student-athletes' many pursuits away from athletics, the Bates College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee submits the first male and female SAAC Student-Athlete Spotlight subjects, accompanied by their own descriptions of something they do in another area of Bates life:

Zoe Donaldson '11
Field Hockey

"I sang a cappella throughout high school, and knew that I wanted to pursue it in college, as well as athletics. Actually, it was a friend of mine who signed me up for auditions first year, and the rest sort of fell into place. I've been in the group The Merimanders for four years now, and am the current president. Although balancing my commitment to field hockey and a cappella can be a bit stressful, for the most part they complement each other well. I feel very fortunate that an institution like Bates allows me to pursue all my various passions, without the pressure to pick and choose what activities I might be involved in. I can't imagine my Bates experience without both field hockey and a cappella as a part of my life."

Rory Cosgrove '11
Men's Lacrosse

"The play I'm in is called Hotel Universe, by Philip Barry. It's a 1930's dark comedy. I'll be playing the role of Stephen Field, who is the father of Ann Field, and an ex-physicist who helps Ann's friends face their pasts and make sense of their lives in the present. I've also been in All the World's a Grave by John Reed, which was an experimental play melding several stories by Shakespeare into one new one. I played Macbeth in that. I also did an independent study last semester, a monologue called Bash, by Neil LaBute, where I played John. It is relatively tough to balance everything between acting and athletics -- theater productions require the same sort of discipline that lacrosse practice does, along with the [equivalent] time commitment. In that way being an athlete has really helped me maintain a strong level of focus in both worlds. It's like with anything: if you don't commit 100 percent, you won't get the results you're looking for. Bates is also such a great place because it allows someone with diverse interests like myself to explore so many different avenues."

Kazarian's goals lift field hockey past Colby and into playoffs
October 29, 2010

Sema Kazarian's two second-half goals propelled Bates past Colby for a spot in the NESCAC Championship.
LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates senior Sema Kazarian scored two second-half goals to lift the Bates College field hockey team to a come-from-behind, 2-1 NESCAC victory over visiting Colby on Friday at Campus Avenue Field, in the regular-season finale for both teams.

With the win, Bates (5-9, 2-7 NESCAC) earned the eighth and final seed in the NESCAC Field Hockey Championship. The Bobcats will play at No. 1 seed Tufts on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinals. Connecticut College and Bates both finished with identical conference records of 2-7, tying for seventh place in the final standings. In head to head competition, Connecticut College defeated Bates to earn the No. 7 seed.

Colby finishes the year at 6-8 overall, 1-8 NESCAC.

Colby senior Heather Quadir (Medfield, Mass.) scored an unassisted goal, her team-high fifth tally, less than five minutes into the contest to give the Mules an early lead. Quadir collected a loose ball on a Colby penalty corner, and her shot was deflected by a Bates stick past senior goalkeeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.). Colby outshot Bates 14-5 in the first half.

Kazarian (Providence, R.I.) evened the game in the 43rd minute, redirecting a shot by junior Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) past Colby senior goalie Liz Fontaine (Wilbraham, Mass.). Kazarian struck again four minutes later, when sophomore Laura Baran (Pittsburgh, Pa.) forwarded the ball on a restart, and Kazarian again was there to deflect the ball into the Colby net for her third goal of the season.

McEnroe kept the game tied at 1-1 during the second half when she turned away a Colby fast-break opportunity.

McEnroe made 13 saves in goal for Bates, while Fontaine totaled seven saves for Colby, which outshot Bates 25-15 and earned 11 penalty corners to Bates' four.

Regular Season Wrap-Up

Entering their final week of regular season competition, the Bobcats find themselves at a record of 4-9 (1-7 in the NESCAC).

Following the Babson game, Bates notched another "W" with a 3-0 final score versus the University of Southern Maine. The Bobcats split their next two matches, with a conference loss to Wesleyan (1-4; look for a post detailing this Play 4 The Cure game soon!) & a victory against New England College (4-1). Yesterday, the team took on NESCAC competitor Middlebury at Middlebury, VT, & came up short, losing 1-4.

With one regular season game left on the schedule, the Bobcats will look to buckle-down & get to work this week in practice. This Friday, October 29, Bates will play host to NESCAC rival Colby College. Most likely, the winner of the game will move on to the eight-team NESCAC Championship, which begins with quarter-final play on October 31. The Bobcats will look to refocus collectively & individually in preparation for the big game. GO BATES!

Bobcats take Babson to OT, fall 2-1

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Bobcats put in a determined, focused effort, but eventually fell to the Babson Beavers 2-1 in the first overtime period at MacDowell Field on Sunday afternoon.

Bates struck first in the opening period, as junior Sarah Merullo (Essex, Mass.) pulled the ball out of a scramble in front of the cage and ripped a drive toward the lower left corner. Babson junior goalie Jess Pashos managed to get the tip of her stick on it, but the ball tipped inside the left post for the game’s first goal at 20:37.

After the goal, Bates continued to dominate play in the first half. The second half saw a surge in offense by Babson, yet Bates still had numerous chances to add to its own score. Most notably, about halfway through, junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) took a shot from the top right side of the circle that struck the upper far post. With about five seconds to play in regulation, sophomore Riley Kundtz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) narrowly missed a tip-in with a diving effort off the far post.

Babson had several chances to tie the game in the second half, but Bobcats senior goalie Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) made several outstanding saves to keep the hosts off the board. She made a tremendous kick save on a drive toward the right corner in the 52nd minute, and then denied another bid from in front of the cage less than six minutes later. McEnroe's best save of the day came with just under 10 minutes to go in regulation, when a Beaver fed the ball to a wide-open teammate in the middle of the circle. The Beavers’ star rookie ripped a shot from point-blank range, but McEnroe came charging out of net and made a sprawling save to preserve the Bobcats’ lead.

The Beavers did score in the 63rd minute of play, beginning with a hard shot from the right side that was saved by McEnroe. The rebound kicked out to the middle of the circle, where a waiting Beaver shot into an open cage to knot the game at 1-1 with 7:33 remaining in regulation.

Both teams had great scoring chances in the overtime period, including two just 23 seconds apart. A Babson foward had an open look from the top of the circle that was denied by a kick save from McEnroe at 72:23, and after Bates took the ball the length of the field, the Beaver keeper made a nice kick save on a shot by Bates junior Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) at 72:40.

After earning their third penalty corner of the overtime period, Babson finally clinched the victory in the 83rd minute. The ball was inserted to the top of the circle, where the hitter dished a pass to a teammate on her left. The two then executed a give-and-go that resulted in an open look from the top of the circle, where the game-winning goal was generated at 82:44.

Katie Mc Enroe played a stellar game in goal and the defense did a good job keeping Babson's attack in check. Although a “W” would certainly have been the preferred outcome, the Bobcats are proud of their continued improvements, determination, & attention to details on the pitch.

The Bobcats will take on their next opponent, the University of Southern Maine, tomorrow at 5 p.m. on their own turf. You can catch the action via live video streaming at First Team Broadcasting's Bates website. Go Bobcats!

Bobcats beat Williams!

On a beautiful, but chilly October day, the Bates field hockey team defeated Williams by a score of 1-0. As easily as the score could have been 3-1 in the Bobcat's favor, there was something extra-special about notching the 1-0 win.

From the first whistle, Bates played with urgency and focus. We were able to generate more offensive opportunities and to put some real pressure on the Williams defense. Finally that pressure paid off as senior defender Annie Wilson (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) picked off an attempted pass at the 25, carried the ball into the circle and sent a hard pass to the left, where her former high school teammate, Kundtz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) was waiting at the post to redirect the ball past Williams goalkeeper Katrina Tulla for a 1-0 lead.

Bates had a slight edge in play in the first half especially in terms of time of possession , but as we knew would happen Williams turned up the pressure in the second half. Both teams had good scoring opportunities that they were unable to capitalize on. The Bobcats had a number of breakaway chances that we just couldn't quite finish off.

The Garnet defense held tough throughout the contest and came up with some brilliant plays. Senior goalkeeper Katie McEnroe (Hockessin, Del.) tallied 16 saves while junior Mackenzie Ross(N. Yarmouth, ME) had a clutch defensive save in the second half to preserve the lead. Junior Amanda Brusca(Pride's Crossing, MA), sophomore Alie Philip(Simsbury, CT) and senior captain Zoe Donaldson(Bronxville, NY) also made some crucial plays inside our defensive 25 to help shut down the Williams attack.

The victory was our first conference win of the season, but more importantly was the first game that Bates played the way they are capable of playing for the entire(or most of) 70 minutes. It was great to get the win at home on Parents and Family weekend and to be able to have so many of the parents present!

Currently, we are on our way to Babson to take on the Beavers in a non-conference game with a 2pm start. If you can't be there in person please check us out online-the game can be followed via Live Stats: and via live video:http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/babson.portal#

Bates Athletics Bobcat of the Week

Lyndsay Beaton '12

Bates junior forward Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored single goals in both her rookie and sophomore seasons with the Bates field hockey team. But this season she has asserted herself as the team's top scorer, and one of its most consistent performers as well.

Beaton scored a goal in Bates' game at UMaine-Farmington last Wednesday, and she assisted on sophomore Michelle Brady's (Milton, Mass.) goal in Saturday's setback at No. 2 nationally ranked Tufts. Beaton has scored points in five out of seven games this season, including goals against three nationally ranked NESCAC opponents in Amherst, Bowdoin and Trinity.
