BOBCAT OF THE WEEK

Bobcat of the Week of Sept. 24, 2012: Riley Kundtz ’13

The Bates field hockey team’s leading scorer in the 2011 season, Riley Kundtz ’13, raised her steady level of play in Sunday’s 3-2 loss at Babson, contributing to both of the Bobcats’ goals in a strong effort against a tough opponent.
Kundtz (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), a team captain, tallied her ninth career goal just 23 seconds before halftime of the non-conference game, tipping a shot by junior Lexie Carter (Saco, Maine) into the net to tie the Beavers 1-1.
After Babson built a 3-1 lead in the second half, the Bobcats cut their deficit to 3-2 with 12 minutes to play, as junior Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) took a penalty corner entry pass from Kundtz on the left side of the circle and ripped a direct shot into the center of the cage for her third goal of the season.
Bates accepted the loss, as Babson rose to 7-2 on the season, but Kundtz’s play helped the Bobcats show their competitiveness against high-quality opponents.

Reunions right around the corner!

Coming off of a beautiful Commencement weekend that was jam packed with events that culminated with Commencement itself and more than a bit of star power thanks to Robert DeNiro,  Gwen Ifil and scene-stealer Princeton Microbiologist Bonnie Bassert, campus is quiet this week.  If anything, it is catching its breath in preparation for next weekend and the arrival of Alumni from the classes ending with 2's and 7's!  I hope that many of you who qualify, will be making the trip back to Bates.  There has been quite a bit of building and renovation on campus even since the 2007 class departed and it all makes Bates look even better.

I am sorry that I don't have all of the team photos for the returning classes, but I thought that thse of you coming back for your first real reunion would appreciate this! Pictured above is the 2006 team (front row: Molly Lanigan Carr '07, Liz Greenwood '07, Allison Marshall '07.  Seated: Megan Ptery '07, Carolyn King '07, Sarah Sprague '07, Katherine Forester '07, Stephanie Nihon '07)

Bobcat Abroad: Michelle Brady

Age: 20

Nickname: Brady

Location Abroad: Florence, Italy

Other Countries You Have Visited While Abroad: Switerzerland, France, Spain

Institution Where You Are Studying: Syracuse University

Favorite Class: Photography

Last Meal You Ate: I had the best Pear and Cheese Raviolis, antipasto, chocolate cake & wine for lunch

Last Historic Site You Visited: I went to the Eiffel Tower at night and climbed to the top. It was an amazing view

Favorite National Artist (Music, Arts, Etc.): Michelozzo; he built the Medici Palace which is one of my favorite palaces in Florence.

Favorite National Athlete: I am not too familiar with famous athletes, but we  are going to a Fiorentina soccer game this weekend.

Favorite Local Eatery: Gato el Volpe, they have the best family style  meal where you get antipasto, vegetables, pasta and wine for a cheap price!

Favorite National Fashion Trend: Mink Fur coats, all the old Italian women wear them

Favorite Foreign Word(in your host country's native  language): Bellissima (means  pretty..used to describe a  place/building/landscape)

Describe Your Favorite Experience To Date: We were walking around in Paris and saw women dressed in really bright  and unique clothes. We then realized we were walking with all the  models/ designers who were going to a fashion show, since it was  fashion week in Paris. Then we saw a massive group of paparazzi  following a woman with all blue on and followed them. We fought  through the paparazzi and got right next to Katy Perry. We got sooo close to her it was crazy.

What You Are Doing To Stay In Shape: Running up a hill behind our  apartment that overlooks Florence and biking to school

What You Miss Most About Bates: friends at bates, the close proximity of everything at Bates, playing fh on the turf, chicken wraps, general  tao's chicken, hashbrowns, bagels and cream cheese

Anything Else About Your Experience: Nicole and I live with a host  family who speaks NO english. The language barrier has been extremely difficult and dinners consist of our host parents talking in Italian  and us nodding and laughing when we think they are telling jokes. We are starting to get better though and can understand more of what they are saying. Our host mom makes amazing food, my favorite being cheese risotto with tomatoes. She forces us to eat a TON, and we have three courses every night for dinner.. I think one night we ate the uterus of a cow..but not too sure because we couldn't understand what they were saying.

Also, we went to Switzerland and skiied the Swiss Alps. Nicole and I  hadn't skied in about five years and we by accidently went down a black diamond and had to roll down the hill because it was the  steepest hill I have ever seen..

Favorite National Athlete: I do not have a favorite athlete but my favorite team is of course Florentina, the professional soccer team of Florence. I am going to my first game this weekend against their biggest rival.

Favorite Local Eatery: Gusta Pizza. It is the best pizza I have ever had!

Favorite National Fashion Trend: Leather jackets and scarves.

Favorite Foreign Word(in your host country’s native language): “cucchiaio” (spoon). I also love the expression “Allora,” which is used all the time to mean “well” or “let’s see.”

Anything Else About Your Experience: Michelle and I are living with an Italian host family, an older retired couple who have been hosting students for 15 years. They speak very little English so there have definitely been some difficult but comical issues of miscommunication but our Italian is getting better every day. They are so nice and our host mom Giovanna is also an amazing cook!
